CodaBow Bows

CodaBow has earned a reputation among teachers and professionals as a maker of innovative and meticulously crafted bows. CodaBow bows are consistently well balanced and responsive, with playing characteristics that are vastly superior to most comparably priced wooden bows. And, they produce a tone that is markedly richer and clearer than that of other carbon fiber bows on the market. We recommend them highly for both students and professionals. Note: J.S. Fisher Violins is an authorized CodaBow dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is J.S. Fisher Violins an Authorized CodaBow dealer?
Yes. We have a long established relationship with CodaBow. We purchase CodaBow products directly from their workshop in Winona, Minnesota. And, we work together to answer customer questions and meet any service needs that arise.
  • What does the CodaBow warranty cover?
Please see CodaBow's warranty page at: http://codabow.com/promise.html for a description of what is and is not covered under their warranty. The folks at CodaBow have always been friendly and professional, offering excellent service to our customers, both before and after the sale.
  • Where can I get my CodaBow rehaired? Are CodaBows rehaired in a special way?
CodaBow bows are rehaired in the traditional way, and can be serviced by whomever you trust with your wooden bows. Or, if you prefer, you can contact CodaBow at 888-CODABOW to arrange service by mail. Their fees are very reasonable.
  • What rosin do you recommend for CodaBow bows?
We recommend rosins based on desired playing characteristics and tone, style of music, type of strings, and other factors. And, there are certainly rosins that we recommend more highly than others for all bows. But, there is no one rosin that we recommend specifically for CodaBow bows. For more, please see our Guide to Rosin. When preparing bows for trial, we generally use a blend of Andrea Solo and Melos Light.
  • Are CodaBow bows available in a choice of colors?
No. The CodaBow SX and Joule bows have a Natural Graphite (Grey) tint, and the rest are tinted brown. They are, however, quite attractive in either color - much more visually appealing than other carbon fiber bows.
  • How do CodaBow bows compare to wooden bows?
A quality pernambuco bow requires both fine wood (which is becoming very scarce) and fine craftsmanship. Consequently, fine wooden bows tend to be quite expensive. Those in this price range tend to be sluggish, poorly balanced, poorly curved, warped, crooked, twisted, or all of the above. It is rare to find a wooden bow, at this price, that is both stiff and agile.

CodaBow bows are stiff and agile, with a perfect curve, and an excellent balance. Consequently, CodaBow bows tend to be much more responsive and easier (and more enjoyable) to play. Still, some players do prefer the look, feel, and/or tone of real wood to that of carbon fiber. For those players, we recommend saving up for a quality pernambuco bow, starting in the $2,000.00 - $2,500.00 range. Note: If you've tried other carbon fiber bows and were not pleased with the tone, but do not have the funds for a fine pernambuco bow, consider trying the CodaBow GX. It has a richness and quality of tone that may surprise you. We've heard from many customers that they prefer its sound to that of their wooden bows.
